Toluca

Mexico hotels

Toluca is the capital city of Mexico State, and is the fifth largest city in Mexico. As characteristic of urbanized places, there are all of the modern conveniences found in major metropolitan areas, from shopping plazas to buffet restaurants. The beginning for this city, however, began after being founded by the Matlazincas, and later colonized and named for Toluca de Lerdo in 1861. The friar that came to the area following the Spanish colonization was greatly respected for his assistance in town improvements and progress, as well as being dedicated enough to learn the native language of the Matlazincas. He also served to protect the people from injustices showing great kindness. Visitors to Toluca can expect a relaxed and friendly atmosphere from wonderful people who are warm and welcoming, a remnant of the joy once given by the friar.

Archeological ruins are found just north of Toluca in Calixtlahuaca, a settlement of elaborate temples and buildings covering 317 hectares that existed from AD 950 until 1525 with the Spanish conquest. Visitors can walk among the ruins and scale the area with the spirits of pre-Hispanic days. The Volcano of Toluca is a nonactive volcano that is a major outdoors recreational area, and the park even allows automobiles to drive through the volcano. No where else can a tourist get such an experience.

Chorizo, pumpkin mole and pipian are traditional cuisine that originates from Toluca. Any tourist would be treated to a delectable reward after finding a fresh chorizo, or Mexican sausage that has spicy goodness blended with juicy meats best grilled and served diced on a tortilla. Pumpkin mole is a culinary twist to the traditional turkey mole, and pipian is a sauce of that has almonds and guero chiles blended with olives and capers to create a first-class masterpiece for the mouth. Beverages in Toluda are classified in two terms: garapinas and mosquitos. Garapinas are a non-alcoholic pinapple drink, and the mosquito is a type of fruit infusion containing alcohol. These are customs that should be observed while in Toluca to get the full on experience of the area, its people and its culture.
